This course is self-contained. It was designed for teaching as part of workshops in information skills for engineering run by librarians at Glasgow and Strathclyde University libraries, but can be used for self-directed learning and for reference purposes. |

If you are studying in a workshop: |
Your teacher will indicate when and how to use these materials. |
If you are studying alone: |
Learners are not compelled to follow these modules in any particular order,
but for best effect you are advised to begin with Module 1, Managing
Your Information for Research, which contains core skills. This should be followed by
Module 2, Information resources for engineers.
Module 3, Information types for engineers, is an
introduction to a range of information types which is best used as a reference source
rather than followed right through. Module 4, Further
information and resources, provides a range of references and links to other useful
material. The materials make use of a range of activities and exercises. It is important for effective learning that you participate in these activities. The activities are indicated by coloured lettering, like this: ActivityMany activities are followed by a comment in a pop-up window. If there's a comment, it will appear as a link. Try this one: CommentSome of the activities require you to leave the course and use other software, in particular online databases. These activities depend on access to the relevant databases provided by other organisations. In some circumstances it may be necessary to wait in order to log on to these services. Instructions for access to databases are given as required. |
For reference |
You can use the course as a source of reference. There are two ways to access the information. If you have a clear idea of the topic, you can search for keywords by clicking on the Search button at the bottom of each page. Alternatively you can browse the information, using the Map page as a starting point. |
Finding your way around |
To move around the course there is a navigation
bar at the bottom of every page. This has Back and Forward arrow
buttons which will take you to the next page and the previous page in the sequence of
learning materials. These buttons do not keep a record of your trail through the learning
materials. To retrace your trail through the course, you should use the Back button in
your web browser. You can get back to the opening Home page at any time by using the Main
button. To begin the course now, click on the right-hand arrow button below. To go back to the Course Contents page, click on the left arrow. |
